Wine in Academics
Wine's a very big and complex project, which offers an incredible amount of finding your personal way of getting involved. One way might be the academic way: For example, my (DavidGümbel's) Diplomarbeit had to do a lot with Wine. As a result, my supervisor (Professor Spruth of Tübingen university) has agreed to accept more Studienarbeiten and Diplomarbeiten based on Wine.
Idea
The following paragraphs contain a list of subjects that are candidates such academic works based on Wine. If you think there's a particular project page floating around on this Wiki that might fit in here, please add a link or create a page describing what you had in mind. Any ideas are welcome! For any questions, please contact DavidGümbel. Thanks.
I would love to see this being extended to other universities, also in other countries than Germany. I am interested in any kind of cooperation with educational institutions, preferably from the german-, english- or french-speaking parts of the world.
Studienarbeiten and the Google Summer of Code
A Studienarbeit has the purpose of preparing a student for the kind of work that is demanded in the Diplomarbeit. It usually requires about three months of full-time work, and may or may not produce a research result. Most people do it in their third year of academic education.
Some of these projects might be good candidates for the stipends offered by Google's Summer of Code. OTOH, probably all of the SummerOfCode project proposals would also make a good Studienarbeit.
Please feel free to add links or information on whatever seems appropriate for a SA below.
SingleSignOn. KaiBlin is working on this, as it's fortunately become his SummerOfCode (2005) project. His Studienarbeit, which will be based on this project, is supervised by ProfSpruth and DavidGümbel.
Viruses on Wine. Idea: Take, say, three popular Windows-based viruses and find out how they work and how they perform on Wine. Based on that, recommend methods to avoid or limit the damage of possible infections of Windows applications running under Wine. Description (DE). Status: Available as Studienarbeit. Contact: DavidGümbel
CUPS and Wine. Investigate compatibility and its problems of Wine with CUPS, with regard to typical office scenarios. More Information (de). Status: Feng Xiao is working on this, supervised by DavidGümbel and ProfSpruth.
Integrate the ClamAV virus scanner into Wine (see Marcus' post for more information)
Wine and Valgrind. Essentialy a "make Wine and Valgrind work together" task, which might as well be suitable for a Diplomarbeit. Contact: DavidGümbel
Diplomarbeiten
A Diplomarbeit is roughly the equivalent of a Master's thesis: A project of about six months of fulltime work at the end of about the fifth year of academic education. It's a research project, but usually comprises (extensive) programming tasks, too.

I'd like to thank Dan Kegel and JeremyWhite for sharing their thoughts on this matter with me, and Google for funding the SummerOfCode.
