Running Google Sketchup on Wine
Google Sketchup is a freely downloadable 3D modeling application first introduced for MS Windows in 2000.
As of Wine-1.0, Sketchup 6 and 7 both run on Wine, at least with Nvidia graphics cards, although you may have to jump through some hoops to get it working.
If you've been waiting to run Sketchup in Linux, wait no more! Please test it against wine-1.1.11 or later, and file bugs at bugs.winehq.org for any new problems you find.
Tips:
bug 14045: If you get the error "SketchUp was unable to initialize OpenGL!], run regedit, open HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\SketchUp6\GLConfig\Display, and change HW_OK to 1.
- If you have an nvidia card: you probably need nvidia's proprietary graphics driver. The open-source nv driver isn't good enough yet. (So, on Ubuntu, go to System / Administer / Hardware Drivers, and select the latest proprietary driver. But be sure to turn off Compiz, i.e. go to System / Preferences / Appearance / Visual Effects, and select None.)
If you're having trouble with an older version of Wine, use the latest Wine (currently 1.1.11) from http://winehq.org/download
bug 16164; fixed as of wine-1.1.11: If it crashes in the "Welcome to Sketchup" dialog when you click "Start Using Sketchup", uncheck the box "show at startup".
bug 16511, fixed as of wine-1.1.11: To use the Ruby scripts (sketchup.google.com/download/rubyscripts.html) you'll need to convert them from DOS format to Unix format. (e.g. sudo apt-get install tofromdos; dos2unix -f parametric.rb windows.rb)
